Salt test kits are used to measure the concentration of salt (sodium chloride) in various environments, most commonly in saltwater swimming pools, aquariums, and industrial settings.
Depending on what you are trying to test, there are three main types of kits available.
1. For Saltwater Pools & SpasIf you have a saltwater chlorine generator, you need to keep your salt levels within a specific range (typically 2,700–3,400 ppm) for the system to work.
Test Strips (e.g., AquaChek): The most common and affordable method. You dip a strip into a sample of pool water, and a chemical reaction causes a color change on a scale.
Liquid Titration Kits (e.g., Taylor K-1766): Considered the "gold standard" for accuracy. You add drops of a reagent to a water sample until the color changes (e.g., from yellow to brick red). The number of drops tells you the exact salt level.
Digital Handheld Meters: These measure the electrical conductivity of the water to give an instant digital readout. They are fast but require occasional calibration with a "standard" salt solution to stay accurate.
In fish tanks, "salinity" is often measured as Specific Gravity rather than just ppm.
Refractometers: A device where you place a drop of water on a lens and look through an eyepiece at a light source. It is highly accurate and used by most hobbyists.
Hydrometers: A plastic swing-arm device that floats in the water. It’s cheap and easy but can be inaccurate if air bubbles stick to the arm.
Digital Salinity Pens: Electronic testers that provide a reading in PPT (parts per thousand) or Specific Gravity.
Bresle Test Kits: Used in industrial coating and painting. They measure soluble salts on a steel surface before it is painted to prevent corrosion.
Damp Analysis Kits: Used by building surveyors to detect "hygroscopic salts" (nitrates and chlorides) in walls, which helps distinguish between rising dampness and simple condensation.
Iodine Salt Kits: Small kits used in food safety to check if table salt has been properly iodized.
| Type | Accuracy | Ease of Use | Best For |
| Test Strips | Moderate | Very Easy | Quick pool maintenance |
| Titration (Taylor) | High | Moderate | Precise pool balancing |
| Refractometer | High | Moderate | Saltwater aquariums |
| Digital Meter | High | Very Easy | Frequent testing (requires calibration) |
