Sand blasting with copper slag (also known as iron silicate) is one of the most popular methods for heavy-duty industrial cleaning. It is a byproduct of copper smelting that is quenched in cold water to produce hard, angular granules.
Because of its high density and "sharp" nature, it is often preferred over silica sand for stripping tough coatings and rust.
1. Why Copper Slag? (The Advantages)High Efficiency: Its angular shape acts like thousands of tiny knives, cutting through rust, mill scale, and old paint much faster than rounded abrasives.
Low Free Silica: Unlike traditional sand, copper slag contains less than 0.1% free silica. This drastically reduces the risk of silicosis, a deadly lung disease.
High Density: It is roughly 20% heavier than other mineral slags (like coal slag). This extra mass means it hits the surface with more kinetic energy, increasing productivity.
Low Dust: It is a very "tough" material with low friability (it doesn't shatter easily on impact), which keeps the workspace clearer and improves visibility for the operator.
| Property | Typical Value |
| Hardness | 6.0 – 7.0 (Mohs Scale) |
| Shape | Sharp, Angular, Multi-faceted |
| Color | Glassy Black / Dark Grey |
| Bulk Density | 100 – 120 lbs./cu. ft. |
| Specific Gravity | ~3.4 g/cc |
Copper slag is sold in different "mesh" sizes depending on how deep a "profile" (the roughness left on the metal) you need for your new paint to stick.
Medium (12/40 Mesh): Creates a profile of 3.0 – 5.0 mils. Best for heavy rust, thick marine coatings, and bridge maintenance.
Fine (20/50 Mesh): Creates a profile of 2.0 – 3.5 mils. The "general purpose" choice for new steel and typical refinery maintenance.
Extra Fine (30/60 Mesh): Creates a profile of 1.0 – 2.5 mils. Used for light rust removal or on thinner metals where you want to avoid warping.
While copper slag is the "budget king" of heavy-duty blasting, it is often compared to Garnet, the premium alternative.
| Feature | Copper Slag | Garnet |
| Cost | Very Low ($) | High ($$$) |
| Reusability | 1 – 2 times (mostly expendable) | 3 – 5 times (highly recyclable) |
| Cleaning Speed | Fast | Very Fast |
| Environmental | Can contain trace heavy metals. | Natural mineral; very "green." |
Air Supply: Always use a Type CE supplied-air respirator (blast helmet). Even though it has low silica, the paint or rust you are removing (like lead paint) can be highly toxic.
Encapsulation: Because copper slag is an "expendable" (one-time use) abrasive, it creates a lot of waste. Use plastic sheeting or "containment" to prevent the spent grit from entering soil or waterways.
Static Grounding: Ensure your blast hose is internally grounded to prevent static shocks, especially in refineries or tanks.

Steel Shot Blasting is a high-velocity industrial surface treatment process used to clean, strengthen (peen), or polish metal surfaces.1 It involves "bombarding" a workpiece with small, spherical steel pellets (shot) using centrifugal force or compressed air.2
+1
Unlike sandblasting, which uses mineral abrasives, shot blasting primarily uses metallic media and is almost exclusively performed within enclosed, automated machinery.3
⚙️ How the Process Works
The heart of a shot blasting system is the Centrifugal Blast Wheel.4
Acceleration: An electric turbine (the blast wheel) rotates at high speeds, using centrifugal force to hurl steel shot against the target part.5
Impact: The spherical shot strikes the surface, "peening" the metal.6 This action hammers out imperfections, removes rust/scale, and compresses the surface layer.7
+1
Recycling: The used shot falls through a floor grate, is cleaned of dust and debris in a Separator, and is sent back to the storage hopper to be reused (up to 3,000 times).8
While often used interchangeably, the shape of the media significantly changes the result:
| Feature | Steel Shot (Spherical) | Steel Grit (Angular) |
| Shape | Round, smooth balls. | Sharp, random, crushed edges. |
| Action | Peening/Polishing: Hammers the surface. | Etching/Scrubbing: Cuts into the surface. |
| Result | Smooth, shiny, and densified finish. | Rough, "toothed" profile for paint bonding. |
| Primary Use | Stress relief (peening) and heavy cleaning. | Removing thick coatings and prep for painting.9 |
