A rubber spider coupling is a type of flexible shaft coupling commonly used to transmit torque between two shafts while compensating for slight misalignments, vibration, and shock. It consists of three main parts:
Two metal hubs – Each is mounted on a shaft.
An elastomeric element (the "spider") – Made of rubber or similar material, it fits between the hubs.
Vibration dampening: The rubber spider absorbs shock and vibration.
Misalignment compensation: Handles angular, parallel, and axial misalignment to a limited extent.
Easy maintenance: The rubber spider is replaceable.
No lubrication: Dry operation makes it clean and low maintenance.
Jaw Couplings: The most popular design using a rubber spider. The spider fits between curved jaws of two hubs.
Oldham and gear couplings may also use elastomeric elements but are different in structure.

NBR (Nitrile rubber) – General-purpose
Polyurethane – Higher torque and temperature resistance
EPDM or Silicone – For specialized chemical or thermal conditions
