High-temperature steam hoses are critical safety components designed to transport saturated or superheated steam without rupturing or degrading. Because steam is extremely dangerous, these hoses have a much higher safety factor (often 10:1) than standard water hoses.

  • The "Pin-Pricked" Cover: If you look closely at a rubber steam hose, you will see tiny holes. These allow small amounts of steam that permeate the inner tube to escape rather than forming bubbles (blisters) that could cause the hose to explode.

3. Stainless Steel Corrugated Hose (The "Extreme" Choice)

As we discussed earlier, these are the best for the highest temperatures and permanent installations.

  • Why use it for steam? It won't "age" or become brittle like rubber. If your steam is "Superheated" (dry steam above $+250°C$), rubber will fail quickly, but stainless steel remains structural.

  • Expansion: They are excellent for steam lines that undergo "thermal cycling" (turning the steam on and off), which causes pipes to expand and contract.

4. Critical Safety Hazards

Using the wrong hose for steam can be fatal. Two specific phenomena to watch for are:

  • "Popcorning": In rubber hoses, moisture can get trapped in the pores of the inner tube. When steam hits it, that moisture turns to gas instantly and "explosively" expands, tearing the inner lining until it looks like popcorn. This eventually clogs the line or causes a burst.

  • Superheated Steam: Standard rubber hoses are rated for Saturated Steam (steam in contact with water). If the steam becomes "Superheated" (very dry and much hotter), it will "bake" the rubber from the inside out, making it hard and brittle in hours.

5. Proper Maintenance Checklist
  • Drain After Use: Never leave water sitting in a steam hose; this prevents "popcorning" and internal corrosion.

  • Check for "Kinking": A kink in a metal hose is a permanent weak spot. If it's bent too sharply, replace it.

  • Safety Cables (Whipchecks): Always use safety cables at the connection points. If the hose fails, the cable prevents it from "whipping" and hitting workers.
