Most professional DFT meters are "Dual-Function," meaning they automatically switch between two sensing methods depending on the base material (substrate):

• The Probe: The sensor tip that touches the surface. High-end probes are often "ruby-tipped" to prevent wear over time.

• The Display: Digital LCD screen showing the thickness in Microns ($\mu m$) or Mils ($1/1000$ inch).

• Calibration Foils (Shims): Precision-thickness plastic strips used to calibrate the device to ensure accuracy before testing.

• The Body: Usually ruggedized for use in industrial environments (shipyards, auto body shops).
