A DFT Meter (Dry Film Thickness Gauge) is a precision instrument used to measure the thickness of a coating (such as paint, lacquer, or plating) after it has dried. It is a non-destructive testing (NDT) tool, meaning it measures the coating without damaging it.
🔬 How It Works (Sensing Technologies)Most professional DFT meters are "Dual-Function," meaning they automatically switch between two sensing methods depending on the base material (substrate):
Magnetic Induction (Ferrous): Used for measuring non-magnetic coatings (paint, zinc, chrome) on magnetic substrates like steel or iron.
Eddy Current (Non-Ferrous): Used for measuring non-conductive coatings (paint, powder coating, anodizing) on non-magnetic metal substrates like aluminum, copper, or brass.
Ultrasonic: A specialized (and more expensive) version used to measure coatings on non-metal substrates like wood, plastic, or concrete.
The Probe: The sensor tip that touches the surface. High-end probes are often "ruby-tipped" to prevent wear over time.
The Display: Digital LCD screen showing the thickness in Microns ($\mu m$) or Mils ($1/1000$ inch).
Calibration Foils (Shims): Precision-thickness plastic strips used to calibrate the device to ensure accuracy before testing.
The Body: Usually ruggedized for use in industrial environments (shipyards, auto body shops).
